While many people are fearful of having a root canal done, this procedure has improved dramatically over the last few decades, making it routine and safe for our patients. Root canals are performed to save a tooth that is at risk of being lost to an infection of the soft tissue inside the tooth. When this soft tissue underneath the tooth becomes infected, it is called an abscess. This means that eventually the infection will cause the tooth to fall out, and may cause issues for nearby teeth as well.
Your dentist will remove the infected root, smooth the area, and then inject a disinfectant that will remain in the tooth to keep the infection from returning. This then saves the tooth from the infection, allowing the patient to keep it for the rest of their lives if it is taken care of properly. We understand that this can be a stressful procedure, and so we offer sedation options to help make your experience more comfortable.
